Opening Databases in Nemesis

Updated 3 December 2001

The following infomation concerns the opening databases used in Nemesis:
  • Size
The Opening databases are estimated to be 1,200,000 positions in total. This figure changes by the day as an cluster of powerful machines work day an night extending the databases.
  • Coverage
The Nexus 99 opening databases only covered the basic 144 3-move ballots. However Nemesis has extensive play on all the "totally lost" barred openings and mail-play openings, covering in total all 174 3-move openings.
  • Transpositions
All positions in the opening database can be seen by Nemesis via transposition. So even if Nemesis is faced with a new line of play, it will guide the game away from known losses or weak positions and towards known wins or strong positions.
  • Accuracy
The entire 1,200,000+ positions have been verified by Nemesis using the 8 piece endgame database. Without doubt this makes the Nemesis opening database the most powerful and accurate database ever generated. See FAQ for more
  • Adding New Positions
New moves can be added to the "user book", or user's own database of opening positions, by the click of a button. The previous move played will then be added to the book.
  • Self-Learning feature
In addition, entire games can be analysed and added to the database. This allows Nemesis to learn new tricks and traps. A charitable user can also donate the new knowledge to the public domain via the click of a button.
  • Updates will become available (Nemesis Professional only)
In the future, updates to the opening database will become available to Nemesis Professional users. Consequently Nemesis will be kept up to date with new analysis and will become an even more formidable opponent.
