Nemesis 1.2 Release Notes
22 March 2002
Bug Fixes
1. The "shaky screen" bug has largely been fixed. This used to plague users with Internet Explorer 5.0. After certain operations such as making a move, or turning the toolbar on /off, the entire board could possibly move to the right by a small distance, and then back again on the next mouse or keyboard operation. The effect of this problem has been minimized, and there is a new menu option "Auto Scroll Moves" that can completely remove the problem as a workaround (see Enhancements 2). An alternative workaround is to upgrade your Internet Explorer to Version 6, and this is our recommended course of action anyway.
2. The crash when Nemesis exits has been fixed. After Exiting from Nemesis,
sometimes an "Application Error" used to appear. This may appear as:
"Mshta.exe caused an error in module 3. If the 3-move ballot 9-13 24-20 11-15 was selected by using the menu File/New/3-move ballot (144 deck) or 155 deck, an error would occur saying "Undefined is not an object". 4. When copying a game that began from a setup position to the clipboard, the FEN header is now added to the start of the string passed into the clipboard. 5. If the menu item "Think on your time" was checked, and the option to play a sound after Nemesis completes a move was also chosen, the sound could play twice instead of once, if the assumed move that Nemesis saw was followed by a forced capture. Now the sound only plays once. 6. When entering Setup mode, the clocks could still be displayed on the right hand side. The clocks are now made invisible with everything else in the right panel. 7. When down to a 7 pieces versus 1 scenario, with just a capture to win, Nemesis could take the full time allowed to think, instead of just playing the only winning move immediately.
Enhancements
1. The navigation using arrow keys/page up/page down/home/end has been made smoother. 2. A new menu item "Auto Scroll Moves" has been added to the "Settings" menu. The default value is checked. When checked, the current move is always brought into focus on the moves list, for example after navigating with home or end, or adding a new move. If unchecked, the current move could disappear off the top or bottom of the list. This should only be unchecked if the user is having problems with "shaky screen" (see bug fix 1). 3. A new menu item "Animate Pieces" has been added to the "Settings" menu. By default this is checked. When checked and Nemesis is playing a move, the piece animates when moving. When not checked, the piece moves immediately to its destination square, and the piece that last moved is highlighted in a blue border. Unchecking this menu item is ideal for faster and time-critical play. 4. A new menu item "Highlight Last Move" has been added to the "Settings" menu. The default value is checked. When checked. the last piece Nemesis moves, is shown with a blue border. This disappears when you click on a piece or navigate to a different position. 5. After entering Setup mode (and clicking OK) or after selecting the "Play from Here" Menu item from the "Edit" menu, or after using the "take move back" facility, the document name is now reset to say "Untitled", instead of the previous behaviour whereby the original document name was preserved, but marked modified. The previous behaviour was unwelcome because it was easy for a user to accidentally overwrite the original game just by trying out a new variation of play.
6. When "Think on your time" is enabled, the time Nemesis spends thinking,
after having correctly guessed your move, has been
optimised. This is best illustrated with an example. Say Nemesis is set to take
30 seconds on average to move, and Nemesis correctly guesses the human's move.
7. A new menu item "Copy Position" has been added to the "Edit" menu. This copies the current position to the clipboard in FEN format. The equivalent shortcut is Ctrl-F. The other menu item which was named "Copy" has been renamed to "Copy Moves". (This item copies all the moves from the game into the clipboard, including a FEN header at the start, if the game commenced from a setup position.) 8. A new button "Mode" has been added to the main toolbar. This makes it a lot easier to switch playing modes between the 3 options: (1) Normal, where you play against Nemesis, (2) Referee mode, where you play for both sides, and (3) Autoplay mode, where Nemesis plays both sides. The Menu Items "Auto Play" and "Referee Only" are kept in sync with this button, and so these menu items and the new button can be affected by each other. 9. The "Auto Play" and "Referee Only" settings used to be preserved when exiting Nemesis, so the next time Nemesis was started, they were kept the same. But now when Nemesis starts up, the playing mode is always "normal", so that both "Auto Play" and "Referee Only" are turned off. 10. Any window resizing operations are now smoother and tidier. 11. The entire user interface has been made much snappier and more enjoyable. Pieces can now be dragged much faster than before, and animations of pieces are much smoother and faster. 12. When the user clicks the "Stop" button, or presses the Escape key, the response time before Nemesis plays its move has been improved. 13. The menu item to start Nemesis (from Start button, Programs, Nemesis.Info) has been amended to include the icon. 14. The text on some menus has changed to make their purpose clearer. "Auto Play" has been changed to "Nemesis plays both sides". "Referee Only" has been changed to "You play both sides", "Toolbar" has been changed to "Toolbar Buttons", "Statusbar" has been changed to "Move Information". 15. On new installations of Nemesis, the sound is now by default off, previously by default it was set to use the Internal Speaker.
